Conservation Question Answers...
- All answers are correct. Karst is a porous rock formation typical of this area. This system of underground limestone and dolomite caves is what makes our spring-fed drinking water vulnerable to waste poured down sinkholes and building in areas subject to cave-ins.
- Very little of today's rain will flow from kitchen taps tomorrow, as it would over the mountain in Charlottesville. Tests in Waynesboro have shown that some of our drinking water has been traveling underground for as long as 13 years.
- There is no way to know whether our water supply is plentiful or on the brink of catastrophe. The labyrinth of underground springs can involve channels that stretch all the way to West Virginia.
